I worked out that in the 12 weeks of training, I ran about 750km & was thrilled when I beat my 10km PR the Sunday before race day, finishing in 43 minutes flat. After a bit of an easier week to rest up, I was ready to tackle the challenge! Pre-race I woke up at 4:45am on race day & headed straight out the door on my morning walk. I managed to fit in just over an hour on the way to the venue before my wife picked me up & drove me the remaining 25min to the event. In my head, I knew that the race was essentially uphill the first half, then back down the second half the way we came, so I was preparing for a brutal 10. 5km, then a much easier 10. 5km. Upon looking at the map again on the way, I quickly realised the course was more like 12km up & 9km back, not ideal but I'll just have to get it done. Upon arriving, there was a lot more people than I thought, the weather was going to be hot, though cool enough for 6:30am & a nice fog was settling over the start line. I grabbed my bib, stretched up & got myself ready to go.

That being said, it should probably end up around a 5-7 kg / 10-15lb BPW. AM I MISSING ANY GEAR? I have dialled in (or at least am satisfied with) most of my gear for 3-season hikes, but Tasmania weather will be new to me (although I've been in the Himalayas, but that wasn't self-supported). I have been told to expect erratic weather; lots of wind, even snow. So I would be willing to purchase gear if necessary to fill out absent gear in my kit. I am willing to spend a fair bit for good gear, but hopefully I'll obtain it locally in Australia, to save on shipping. Currently, it seems I am lacking, or could use: Rain Pants. I've been told to consider the OR Helium or Foray, and I've seen mentions of the Montbell Versalite. Any suggestions for other brands or models? Being in Australia, something easily available here in the city stores (lbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Launceston since I will be passing through those cities) or locally online would be great. I was also told this would be a great edition to my quiver if I intend to hike in the Australian Alps.
