May B. Miasco (The Freeman) - March 12, 2018 - 12:00am CEBU, Philippines — The gloomy weather over Cebu province and some other parts of the country is caused by the surge of northeast monsoon, locally known as Amihan, said a local officer of the Mactan-based Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA). Netherlen Soletrero, weather specialist of PAGASA Regional Services Division for Visayas, said this event marks the last surge of the northeast monsoon as the country's prevailing wind is slowly changing its direction. She further explained that what is happening now is that the seasonal wind affecting the country is slowly transitioning its direction from northeast to east. She said the northeast monsoon season, which commonly occurs in the country from November to March, is about to end. The northeast winds bring cool breeze to the country since it originates from the wintery mainland China or Siberia. The easterly winds, on the other hand, blows from the tropical Pacific that brings warm and moist air to the country.
