I have been wanting to do all of these write ups for a while now but have been extremely busy with work, flight training, and college. I will condense all areas and give a short right up for each event with dates.... SOLO: Had my first solo February 26th of this year in a Cessna 172. The CFI and I went up for about 45 minutes to make sure I had all the maneuvers and procedures down. He then had me land and pull up to the flight school. I always read stories about the CFI just 'getting out' but no one is getting in or out of an airplane I am flying while the engine is still running. I pulled up, shut down, he got out, I started it back up. I felt very prepared and excited. I felt I had worked very hard to earn that solo. The airport is towered so I got the updated ATIS, requested my taxi clearance, switched to tower and got my takeoff clearance. Stayed in the pattern for about 3 touch and goes then departed to the south to do some maneuvers over the "training grounds". After flying with the biggest smile on my face for about 20 minutes, I got the updated ATIS once again, made my call to tower for a full stop, landed, and got my shirt cut up and put on the wall.
Permits are not for sale up front, they are distributed among the surrounding resorts (dive schools) and they are given out some days or the day before your dive. We have met people that did not make any reservations and ended up by not diving at Sipadan. There are also stories of travelers that just went there and did manage to get a permit. Diving at Sipadan normally is the goal of the whole trip to the area, but diving at surrounding dive spots around Mabul Island, Kapalai Island or even Mataking Island is (almost) just as great (especially if you fancy muck diving; smaller marine life like nudibranches). Scuba diving at Sipadan It is almost impossible to list all the fish and other sea creatures that you might encounter under water when diving at Sipadan. Among the species are schools of big-eye trevallies, many turtles, tornado-like formations of barracudas, schools of humphead parrotfishes, giant mantas, eagle rays, schools of tunas, many species of sharks including schools hammerhead sharks, (sometimes even) whale sharks and thousands of other species of fish (mostly big pelagic fish as Sipadan is known for this).
