This year, 60-year-old Nazeer Ahmed, who owns a small farm in Chakwal, produced 35 maunds of mustard from his farm which measures three and a half acres. "I was very happy about the yield, but when I took the crop to the market, I was disappointed by the low price offered by traders". Nazeer sold his mustard crop at Rs2, 300 per maund, which he said was very low and that he should have been paid at least Rs 3, 500 per maund. Land in Nazeer's village of Khoday is very suitable for growing mustard crop, like most villages in Chakwal and Talagang. The production of the crop has increased over the years, both in terms of the amount of the crop and the land it is cultivated on. However, farmers say that they are not being paid a fair price for their crop. Meanwhile, traders at grain markets maintain that the decrease in prices is due to the increases in crop yields. Mustard is a major source of edible oil in the subcontinent and is thought to have many health benefits. Sarsoon ka saag is a much favoured dish and the crop is also cultivated for fodder.
